At the end of the Heian period, amidst the turmoil of war that engulfed Japan, there was a beautiful yet fierce female warrior.
Her name was Tomoe Gozen.
She served the young warrior Minamoto no Yoshinaka, who was always fighting by his side on the battlefield.
The Childhood of Yoshinaka and Tomoe Gozen
Minamoto no Yoshinaka and Tomoe Gozen first met when they were still children.
Yoshinaka, who lost his father at a young age, was raised under the care of relatives, and it was during this time that he encountered Tomoe Gozen.
The two quickly became known in their neighborhood as mischievous troublemakers, but more than that, they recognized each other’s talents and grew together as companions.
One evening at dusk, Yoshinaka was practicing with a wooden sword in the middle of the fields when Tomoe approached him with a serious expression.
Tomoe Gozen:
“Lord Yoshinaka! Please teach me swordsmanship as well!”
Yoshinaka, moved by her earnest gaze, reluctantly began teaching her. However, Tomoe’s skill with the sword was astonishing, and Yoshinaka soon found himself amazed by her talent.
As the days passed, they spent more time together, learning martial arts and swordsmanship, sometimes playfully teasing each other, and at other times competing fiercely.
They formed a special bond through their shared experiences.
Tomoe determined not to be outdone by Yoshinaka, honed her swordsmanship and horseback riding skills.
Her strength and beauty soon became the talk of those around them.
Over time, a strong bond naturally developed between them.
Yoshinaka:
“Tomoe, when I rise to greatness as a military commander, you must join me on the battlefield.”
Tomoe Gozen:
“Of course, Lord Yoshinaka.”
“As long as you need me, I will follow you wherever you go.”
Yoshinaka drew strength from Tomoe’s powerful words and continued to grow.
The two were not just comrades-in-arms but shared a deep, mutual trust that bound them in a truly special relationship.
The swift advance of Yoshinaka’s army and the brave figure of Tomoe Gozen.
In 1183, Yoshinaka’s army bravely confronted the large forces of the Taira clan.
The Battle of Kurikara Pass.
On this battlefield, Yoshinaka devised a strategy to confront the Taira.
On the eve of the battle, Tomoe Gozen approached Yoshinaka and, with a worried expression, asked him.
Tomoe Gozen:
“Yoshinaka-sama, do you have a strategy to counter the Taira’s large army here?”
Yoshinaka smiled gently and shared his plan with Tomoe Gozen.
Yoshinaka:
“We’ll use cows!”
“Tie torches to their horns and send them charging into the Taira’s camp.”
“This strategy will surely shock the Taira!”
Tomoe Gozen, momentarily surprised, was impressed by Yoshinaka’s ingenuity, her eyes sparkling as she nodded.
Tomoe Gozen:
“That’s a brilliant strategy, Yoshinaka-sama.”
“The Taira will be terrified.”
Yoshinaka’s “Cow Charge” Tactic
As dawn broke, Yoshinaka’s forces attached torches to the horns of the cows they had gathered on the pass.
Tomoe Gozen also prepared the animals, readying them for the charge.
Tomoe Gozen:
“Charge, everyone!!”
At Yoshinaka’s signal, the cows were set loose, running through the Taira’s camp, flames roaring from their horns.
Enemies:
”What’s the hell!!”
The sudden blaze and the cows’ loud cries threw the Taira army into confusion.
Startled by the sudden flames and cries, the Taira army fell into chaos and fled.
Seeing the chaos, Tomoe Gozen swiftly mounted her horse and began cutting down the Taira soldiers individually.
Tomoe Gozen:
“Serves you right!!”
“This is the power of Yoshinaka’s army!”
“Know your place!!”
Her battle cry spurred her comrades into action, and Yoshinaka’s forces overwhelmed the Taira.
The overwhelmed Taira forces tumbled down the slopes one after another, falling off the cliffs.
Many of the Taira soldiers, terrified by the sight, fled, and Yoshinaka’s army secured a great victory at Kurikara Pass.
Yoshinaka’s Final Moments and Tomoe Gozen’s Resolve
However, as time passed, the tides of war shifted, and Yoshinaka’s forces were surrounded.
In 1184, during the Battle of Awazu, Yoshinaka and his few remaining soldiers were trapped by the enemy’s vast army, with no chance of escape.
At that moment, Yoshinaka whispered to Tomoe Gozen.
Yoshinaka:
“Tomoe, you are a woman.”
“Leave here and live a new life.”
Tomoe Gozen’s heart tightened at his words, but she looked calmly at him and replied with strength.
Tomoe Gozen:
“No!!”
“Even if I die, I will fight with you by your side until the end!!”
Yoshinaka:
“Fool!!”
“If it’s known that I was protected by a woman to my dying breath, it would be a disgrace as a man!!”
“Do you want to bring me shame?!”
Yoshinaka’s harsh words struck her deeply.
But Tomoe Gozen knew Yoshinaka was not a cruel man.
He said these words not out of disdain, but to convince her to survive, as he couldn’t bear to let her die with him.
For a moment, she hesitated, but then, with a determined expression, she gazed at him and spoke resolutely.
Tomoe Gozen:
“Understood…”
“But please, allow me to fulfill my final duty.”
“I cannot abandon Yoshinaka-sama and survive without showing my loyalty.”
Tomoe Gozen stood before Yoshinaka, demanding a final one-on-one duel with the enemy forces.
And so, the Taira forces accepted her challenge.
The opponent was a woman.
Confident in his absolute victory, he saw no reason to refuse her duel request.
Before she stood the powerful enemy general, Onda no Hachiro Morishige.
The Fierce Duel Between Tomoe Gozen and Onda no Hachiro Morishige
Onda no Hachiro Morishige:
“What could a mere woman possibly do!!”
Tomoe Gozen:
“Come at me!!”
“Don’t underestimate me just because I’m a woman!!”
The two clashed fiercely with their swords, and in a flash, Tomoe Gozen exploited a gap in Morishige’s defense, overpowering him with swift and forceful moves.
In the next moment, she struck down Onda no Morishige, leaving both enemy and ally alike breathless at the sight of her.
Her victory was not only a symbol of her loyalty to Yoshinaka but also marked the moment of their final farewell…
Tomoe Gozen:
“Yoshinaka-sama, I have fulfilled my final duty.”
“As you commanded, I will now leave the battlefield.”
Tomoe Gozen:
“Yoshinaka-sama, please be safe…”
After saying her final farewell, Tomoe Gozen quietly left the battlefield, carrying her loyalty in her heart, just as Yoshinaka had commanded.
Yoshinaka:
“Good bye, Tomoe…”
Loyalty to Yoshinaka and Tomoe Gozen’s Fate
Tomoe Gozen:
“Yoshinaka-sama, please be safe…”
No matter how much Tomoe Gozen wished for Yoshinaka’s safety, his fate could not be changed.
Even though Tomoe Gozen defeated the formidable Onda no Morishige, the reality of being vastly outnumbered remained unchanged.
Unable to turn the tide against the overwhelming numbers of enemy soldiers, Yoshinaka died.
Even after Yoshinaka passed away, the legend of Tomoe Gozen is still passed down to this day.
After Yoshinaka’s death, there are various theories about Tomoe Gozen’s fate, and her final whereabouts remain unclear.
One such theory suggests that she left the battlefield, became a nun, and lived a peaceful life in her later years.
There is also a theory that Tomoe Gozen may not have existed at all.
However, contrary to this theory, there are five locations in Japan that claim to be her tomb.
